5 Essential Tools That Every Homeowner Should Have

If you look at the 10 most common house problems, you probably don’t have the tools to fix them, much less the skills. Of course, the majority of these should be handled by a professional, as a DIY job might make things worse.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do a few fixes here and there yourself. Otherwise, you might rack up repair bills and find yourself short on cash.

With key home tools in your arsenal, you’ll be able to fix issues fast. And you won’t have to call in a contractor either!

Read on for 5 essential tools you should have as a homeowner.

Hammer

A hammer has multiple uses besides driving things like nails into walls. On the other side is a straight claw, which is handy when you want to pull out nails or rip out walls.

For the most versatile option, we’d suggest a steel 16-ounce rip hammer. Try to get one with a fiberglass handle so you won’t feel as much shock when you hammer things in.

Screwdriver Set

A screwdriver set is a godsend for any homeowner. You’ll be able to loosen and tighten any screws you come across. Plus, some have flat heads you can pry open cans with.

If you don’t have the space for a screwdriver set, then at least go for a 4-in-1. You’ll have a small set of heads to switch out and the set is compact enough to store in a drawer.

Tape Measure

Getting the wrong-sized materials and furnishing can be a pain. Stop eyeballing things and get yourself a proper tape measure!

25 feet is an ideal length for most homes. We wouldn’t recommend going under 16 feet.

Cordless Drill

A hammer and screwdriver are handy, but they don’t provide power like a drill can. It can also make projects go much quicker too!

A cordless drill is best so you don’t have to deal with plugging it in and worry about tripping over its long cord. Just make sure you get a spare battery so if you run out of juice in the middle of a project, you can replace the battery and continue.

Utility Knife

You might feel like your kitchen scissors suffice for cutting things open, but they can only go so far. A utility knife is razor-sharp and you can use it to not only cut open boxes, but also shave wood, cut string, mark mortises, and more.

Buy replacement blades in advance so you don’t ever have to work with dull blades.
